M3P Price in February. SKAT assessment. Help! | Tesla Forum

Hi all, as some of you may know by now, I've been in the process of moving to Denmark and bringing my M3P from Germany with me. It's considered used (older than 6 months/6.000km). I bought it in July this year from Tesla directly as a demo car. I am the second owner on the registration. I imported it (day arrived in Denmark) 16 Aug.

Motorstyrelsen finally sent me the tax bill after much deliberation with an owed amount of 23.320. I immediately argued that this is significantly higher than the current registration tax listed on Telsa's website. I am told this is because they use the original new price from the time of first registration (15 Feb) of 573.142. I find this practice rather odd. Specifically, I bought the car used from Tesla only in late July. In EURs, the price is far, far less than the amount Motorstyrelsen has valued my car at.

So, some basic questions. Is this correct? If so, why is the purchase date not taken into consideration instead of first registration date? Moreover, why is the original purchase price in EUR not considered (I submitted the invoice from Tesla to them)? Lastly, when all that fails, does anyone know the correct price around that time period for the M3P?

Personally, I find this method of price assessment unfair. It retroactively increases the price to an arbitrary point in time of which I have nothing to do. Moreover, it's not at all taking the true current trading value but rather a random percentage taken off the original price from February. This results in the used price valuation being slightly less than the current new price yet with a near 65% increase in taxes owed compared to the higher-price new model. This math makes no sense to me.

I have half a mind to dispute this as there is a formal process that can be done online however, I'm really not sure I'm going to get anywhere with this. Thoughts? Suck it up and pay it?

You have two options:
a) suck it up
b) contact the legal people (in Danish: jura) at FDM - Association of Danish Motorowners. They might anyhow suggest you to suck it up...
Potential legal fees will anyway severely reduce the sound reasons to dispute this in any case.

Welcome to Denmark and the Danish Tax system which has never been logical and especially not when you enter into the area of cars.

There are some basic rules when importing a car to Denmark. The tax on an import is calculated backwards from an estimate of the cars trading value at the date of import. They use various data points from danish dealers to estimate this value. If you can find your own data points that proves a lower trading value, you may have a chance of a few thousand less in registration tax. However, the list price at first registration and trading value at import have an impact which means that you may not save that much.

They use the Danish list price at the time of the first registration to determine the devaluation percentage at the time of import.

Unfortunately for you (and all those who bought an M3 at launch in Europe), the list price in beginning was way higher than now. When you bought the car have no relevance to the Danish Tax Authorities.

Then they discount any deduction in the registration tax with that devaluation percentage. So i.e. you have a discount in the registration tax for each km/l over 20 km/l of DKK 4.000. So if the M3 is listed at 60 km/l it would give you a deduction of DKK 160.000 which is then discounted with the devaluation percentage.

Whatever price you have paid for the car in another country, if it is considered a used car, has NO relevance when calculating the registration tax in Denmark, none-zero-nothing.

You may find this unfair, but remember that EV's get a huge discount on registration tax in Denmark, properly the 2nd highest in the world after Norway.

You can play with the numbers and different pricing points and see what impact they have on the registration tax here

You'll need the official wh/km, range and curb weight.

You can also search for previous imported Model 3's and seen what they have paid in registration tax using this link

A quick search says around the DKK 20.000 mark, some over som under.

To give you another example, if you import a Tesla Roadster from 2011/2012 the registration tax will be around DKK 60-70.000 - and that is for a car that had no registration tax in 2011/2012 ...

Thanks for the feedback. It sounds like it's not worth the hassle and best to simply move forward with their evaluation. @P85DK. When I use your link to search previous M3Ps imported as used I get a nice list of ones imported around the same date (12.02) and all of their listed new prices are lower than my assessment. Do you think it's worth pointing this out to my contact agent at Motorstyrelsen? If I use the new prices in the list, it results in ~5.000 DKK cheaper tax. That's a fair savings.

Give them a call and talk to them about the other imports, new price etc. They are actually very friendly and willing to help you understand and ensure that you get the best outcome. The import date is relevant, but when it comes to the list price first registration date is the only date that counts.

Let us know how it works out for you

To expand on this a bit, I find quite a few M3P all imported around exactly the same date that my car was first registered with an average new price of around 547.448 and the lowest being 535.548 and the highest being 560.413 but most valued around 547.xxx. I really then do not understand the new price valuation of 573.142 given to me as this is fairly higher than anything listed. I tried using way back machine to see if I could dig up prices on the configurator from then but it doesn't work.

Edit: thanks. I'll write them an email with screen shots now and then give him a call later today if I have no response. I'll update the thread if I find out anything.
